Fragrance Seasons: A Shared Human Celebration of Nature’s Shifts

April 24, 2025

Welcome
Where we share our musings on romanticizing the small moments, the stories behind our collections, and life in the garden. Learn more about Sun and Moon here.

Something that has always interested me is our shared human experience of the expression of seasons.  Seasonality is more than just the change of climate throughout the year, it’s also about the way we mark these seasonal changes by celebrating specific seasonal moments.  And it’s so fascinating to me that this is something that we share across different cultures, and even across different eras in history.  In fact, these are some of the values behind the collections I’ve created for Sun & Moon.  In today’s post, I wanted to take a moment to share how we take inspiration from fragrance seasons to create some of our special product sets for each season through the Seasonal Moments series.

Fragrance Seasons

If you’ve been following along for a bit, you may know that seasonality is one of our core values as a company.  This is because I feel strongly that we all benefit from (re)connecting with the ebbs and flows of nature and the earth gently ushering one season in after another.

But to take this concept a step further, I’m also so intrigued by the uniquely human experience of celebrating iconic moments throughout a season, and how this experience is shared across our culture and beyond.

Though we may be in different parts of the country or the world, with diverse climates, histories, and traditions, we nonetheless have similarities in how we express and celebrate the seasons.

Perhaps this interests me so much because I grew up in a very different culture, in Japan, and because I love to travel.  But I also find there to be something so connecting about this shared experience.  (And if you’ve been following along at all, we are ALL about connection at Sun & Moon!)  It’s a set of values and customs that we all have in common.

For instance…

In the Spring

Regardless of our culture, as humans, we all appreciate the arrival of spring after a long winter.

We share the hopefulness and energizing feeling that the early spring months bring.

And many of us also share similar traditions and customs for celebrating particular spring holidays.  Holidays like Easter and Mother’s Day conjure up thoughts of flowers and fresh garden veggies.

Outside of those culture-specific holidays, we also all collectively turn to getting our yards and gardens ready for what’s to come. We celebrate the season with rituals like picnics and festivals.

Seasonal fragrances like lemon and citrus, fresh grass, wildflowers, and herbs connect us to these moments and enhance our experience.

In the Summer

For many cultures, the joys of summertime are lush gardens, lazy days in the heat, and the opportunity to relax from everyday routines.  There’s a sense of energy and ebullience that prevails, instead.

Seasonal fragrances like bright florals, zesty orange, jasmine, and herbs conjure up memories of summer and connect us with those warm months.

In the Fall

Like the entrance of spring, the beginning of fall is widely celebrated across cultures as a time to settle into gratitude for the harvest, and a welcome reprieve from the heat and energy of summer.  We all look forward to cozying up indoors as the weather turns chillier by the day.

With so many fall and winter holidays approaching, we collectively look forward to things like cooking, baking, entertaining, and expressing thanks.

Seasonal fragrances like deep amber, vanilla, plum, and pumpkin get us excited for the celebrations ahead as the year comes to a close.

In the Winter

When the leaves have all fallen and winter settles in, we collectively embrace the welcome slowdown that winter brings after the exuberance of the holidays.  With the leaves gone, evergreen trees fill our landscape.

Seasonal fragrances like juniper and spruce are reminiscent of the winter evergreens and the Christmas tree tradition in the home. Gingerbread harkens to what we bake over the holidays, not just to the root spice of ginger.

Fragrance Seasons and the Sun & Moon Seasonal Moments Sets

Our primary seasonal collections celebrate the expression of each season by evoking what is happening in the natural world that we are a part of.  We’ve created the Seasonal Moments special sets to add another layer to that connection, rooted in our shared human and cultural experiences.

Every Seasonal Moments special set is crafted with care, and we invite you to check them out!
